Starting this September are four new adventures from the time of the First Doctor with the fifth series of The Early Adventures being released as a season, harking back to the beginnings of Doctor Who on television.

The first release in September sees another tale featuring the unforgettable first alien foes of the Doctor in The Dalek Occupation of Winter by David K Barnes, which also stars Robert Daws as The Royal, and Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks.

October’s release is An Ideal World by Ian Potter and stars Carolyn Pickles (Harry Potter, The Bill, Broadchurch) and Tom Stourton (Siblings, Horrible Histories).

In November we have Entanglement by Robert Khan and Thomas Salinsky starring John Rowe (Juliet Bravo, The Crown) and Mark Edel-Hunt (Brideshead Revisited, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Call the Midwife).

And the final release in December will be The Crash of the UK-201 by Jonathan Morris starring Stephen Fewell (Jason Kane in the Bernice Summerfield adventures), Michael Lumsden (Pig Heart Boy, The Buddha of Suburbia) and Carol Starks (In the Bleak Midwinter, Wallander, Coronation Street).

David Richardson explains the series five master plan and the involvement of the Daleks in their first Early Adventures tale: “The plan for this run was to do a season of 1960s Doctor Who. Of course, we couldn’t manage 48 episodes’ worth – that would have been madness – but we’ve done 16 new episodes with Peter Purves and Maureen O’Brien that all follow on from each other and take the listener on a magical journey through time and space.

John Dorney suggested writer David K Barnes to me, and what a find he is. After 54 years of Doctor Who, it’s not easy to find a new slant on a Dalek story, but by golly David has done it almost effortlessly.
