Occupational hazards for the Fourth Doctor

The time travels of the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) continue today with the release of A New Occupation, a box set of brand-new audio adventures in which he and Sarah Jane Smith (Sadie Miller) experience two dangerous periods in Earth’s history. 

First, the TARDIS lands in the thirteenth century, in a city terrorised by the forces of Genghis Khan (Paul Courtenay Hyu). It's up to one heroic figure to put an end to the destruction – not the Doctor or Sarah, but Genghis’s daughter, Alakhai Bekhi (Susan Hingley). 

Then, in the box set’s title story, the duo catch up with their old friend Harry Sullivan (Christopher Naylor) in 1970s Jersey, only for them all to be sent back in time thirty years, to when the island’s residents lived under the heel of Nazi occupation.

The two historical adventures for the Fourth Doctor and friends are: 

Sadie Miller, who plays Sarah Jane Smith, a role originated by her mother Elisabeth Sladen, said: “I always look forward to when a script comes through and I get to work with Tom and Chris again, because I just feel that natural camaraderie. I enjoy it so much. 

“Daughter of Destruction is a very exciting story and a very feminist story as well, with a great central female character that people might not have heard of before. It’s not often that you hear a story like this that’s actually based in fact, in someone who really did exist. It was really exciting to do something so different and so challenging.” 

Christopher Naylor, the voice of Harry Sullivan, added: “It’s an endless delight to play Harry and to spend time with Sarah and the Doctor. Giving Harry a chance to have a bit more time in the TARDIS and with his friends has really been lovely. The writers have done such a good job in capturing that era of Doctor Who. 

“A New Occupation is set in a fairly recent part of our history, so there’s a lot that we can relate to. It allows for that wonderful peril that’s always present in time travel, and the sort of emotional problems that it can throw up. It’s very exciting and scary as well.”
