Cover artwork and scandalous story details are revealed today for Sherlock Holmes Untold, a serialised audio drama which delves into adventures from across the Great Detective’s career.
Sherlock Holmes (Nicholas Briggs) and his assistant Dr John Watson (Richard Earl) will return in the full-cast audio drama serial Sherlock Holmes Untold, which begins in October.
In the eight half-hour episodes, six adventures from across the career of Victorian England’s number one consulting detective will be explored, with each case being based on a reference from one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Holmes stories.
Writer Jonathan Barnes said: “Fans of the Sherlock Holmes stories will know that Conan Doyle absolutely sprinkles them with all of these little mentions of unchronicled cases. Sometimes stories that were incomplete or unsatisfying, sometimes stories too scandalous to be told. This whole series is about building and extrapolating from the hints that Doyle left behind, almost like breadcrumbs for us to follow.”
Sherlock Holmes Untold is a serialised audio drama, with the eight episodes released as weekly downloads beginning on Wednesday 1 October 2025. Each episode will be followed by an ‘after show’ discussion in the weekly Big Finish Podcast. Once all the episodes have been released, the series will also become available as a complete downloadable box set.
Sherlock Holmes Untold is now available to pre-order for just £24.99 exclusively here. Customers who pre-order gain access to the weekly episodic downloads, as well as the complete box set as a download to own.
The eight episodes are:
The Adventure of the Remarkable Worm, Part One
Late November, 1913. A train cuts haughtily across the English countryside. On board: Dr John Watson, the British Prime Minister and a certain tin box, full of accounts and mysteries which have long been too shocking, too scandalous and too dangerous to be told to the public – until now!
The Adventure of the Remarkable Worm, Part Two
Aboard the Prime Minister’s train, Dr Watson is telling a story, long suppressed, about a troubled young journalist, a dead man walking and a creature unknown to medical science. And while the politician listens reluctantly to this tale from long ago, somewhere in the background of it all the closing moves of a quite different game are beginning to be played out.
The Adventure of the Music Hall Hearties
London, 1887. A young man by the name of Bert Stevens is accused of committing the most appalling crime and languishes in Newgate Gaol. He has but days left to him before he is due to hang. Then: an eleventh hour visit from the man who might yet save his life – that celebrated Baker Street detective, Mr Sherlock Holmes!
The Adventure of the Amateur Mendicant Society
Christmas, 1887. A grieving widow receives a curious invitation from a club of which her late husband seemed to be a member: the Amateur Mendicant Society. Dr Watson and an uncharacteristically distracted Holmes investigate, only to pick up the thread of a mystery which will have dreadful ramifications for decades to come.
The Strange Disappearance of James Phillimore
London, 1896 is the scene for an impossible vanishing. A man named Phillimore returns indoors to fetch his umbrella, only to disappear, seemingly forever. For Sherlock Holmes, the solution to the case remains maddeningly elusive – as does that larger mystery which looms, more and more troublingly, behind it.
The Adventure of the Body in the Barrow
1901. A picturesque town on the English coast. Holmes and Watson are taking a much-needed holiday, only to encounter, in this most unlikely of spots, a resurgence of an old acquaintance and the return of a name from the past, the sinister organisation known as the Lighthouse.
The Adventure of the Politician, the Lighthouse and the Trained Cormorant, Part One
On the Prime Minister’s train, as the world stands on the brink, Dr Watson’s stories are reaching their crescendo. Yet before then there is one more account to be revealed – the truth about the long and secret war between Mr Holmes and that tentacular organisation known as the Lighthouse!
The Adventure of the Politician, the Lighthouse and the Trained Cormorant, Part Two
England, the eve of the war. A corrupt politician. A conspiracy that has been in motion for decades. The Lighthouse. Sherlock Holmes. Dr John Watson. And a secret which could bring the Empire to its knees. Time now for the endgame.
Alongside Nicholas Briggs and Richard Earl, Sherlock Holmes Untold guest stars Timothy Bentinck as Mycroft, John Banks as Colonel Sebastian Moran and Inspector Lestrade, Harriet Kershaw as Esmerelda North, Aurora Dawson-Hunt as Gabrielle Phillimore and Emily, and Christopher Naylor as Prime Minister Jasper Cranfield. Further guest cast will be announced at a later date.
