The Master’s State of Decay

New ReleasesDoctor Who NewsDark Gallifrey

The audio drama series Dark Gallifrey, which follows the nastiest Time Lords from the universe of Doctor Who, returns today with the first instalment of a new trilogy. This time, the spotlight is on the desperate and decayed incarnation of the Master portrayed by Geoffrey Beevers.

Written by Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle, the story begins in England, 1896, at the remote Longmoss House. Young Diana Blount (Hannah Brown), along with her cousin Charlotte (Shreya Lallu), is taking a last opportunity to play in her family home before her mother sends her off to be married.

But the girls’ exploration of the eerie East Wing takes a dark turn. In this Gothic horror-styled story, something is haunting Longmoss House, and the Master is coming…

Dark Gallifrey: The Decayed Master – Part One is now available to purchase for just £8.99 (digital download to own) or £10.99 (download to own + single-disc collector’s edition CD), exclusively herePlease note: the collector’s edition CD is strictly limited to 1,000 copies and will not be re-pressed.

Christmas 1896 at the beautiful and secluded Longmoss House. Diana Blount has lived here all her life – but since her father died, Longmoss has lost its magic.

Now the money’s running out, and Mother says Diana must prepare to marry. This will be her last Christmas at Longmoss, running wild with visiting cousin Charlotte and evading the watchful eye of the one remaining servant, matriarchal housemaid Niamh.

Then one day, in the shut-up East Wing, Charlotte and Diana’s games and ghost stories begin to get out of hand. The veil is thin at Longmoss, and something is trying to get through – something with a Master to serve.

This spooky episode’s cast also includes Kate Copeland as housemaid Niamh and Diana’s mother Lady Blount, as well as Barnaby Edwards as the mysterious Oro and the patriarchal Reginald Blount.

Co-writer Lauren Mooney said: “Beevers’ Master is one of the darkest incarnations of the Master, which really allowed us to play in the gothic horror sandbox and create something a bit more mature and complex than the characters can sometimes feel.

“I think that living in constant pain makes him a version of the Master that is wilder, more desperate, more likely to surprise himself and us. He’s like a cornered animal. That’s what pain does – it reduces us – but then, he’s still the Master, he’s still someone who enjoys power.”

The story’s other co-writer, Stewart Pringle, added: “He’s such a shadowy, ambiguous figure in this incarnation so we felt we had licence to lean into horror elements and tell something of a ghost story. Geoffrey’s take on the Master feels like it embodies the character at his most desperate, and that pushed us to create a story which showcases his power but also his vulnerability.

“The brief we got was incredibly open – we were told that these Dark Gallifrey stories should be unlike anything else that Big Finish has ever done, totally free in terms of not just the subject matter but also the narrative form. This is an experimental trilogy that’s about pushing to the edges of the universe and also to the edges of Big Finish’s output.”

Praise for the previous Dark Gallifrey trilogy, The Meddling Monks:
