Gareth David-Lloyd explained his unusual inspiration: "This episode was inspired by a photograph of the original Torchwood SUV that somebody posted online - it was looking very sad on some farmland somewhere, covered in dents and rust and alien spores, aka moss. I felt really sorry for it. I thought, I want to give the SUV one last road trip, one last opportunity to save the day.
"And then I thought, what would it be like to make a couple of youngsters involuntary Torchwood members for a short period of time? Since all the original Torchwood team are gone, let's give these two kids the opportunity to go on the adventure with the SUV, become heroes in their own right, and find themselves."
