Abandoned in the Vortex, the Master’s lost incarnation is about to be thrown a lifeline.

Earth rebuilds in the aftermath of invasion, and power rests with those who innovate. Genius Lila Kreeg makes a deal with the devil to see her dreams fulfilled.

As the Master returns, there are those – like Vienna Salvatori – who wish to hunt him, and those upon whom he wishes vengeance himself...

1. Faustian by Robert Valentine

Drake Enterprises is the most powerful company on Earth. Dr Lila Kreeg is its most valued asset. But her experiments open a doorway which allow an evil back into the universe. The Master can offer Lila the world, so long as she obeys him...

2. Prey by Robert Whitelock

Impossibly glamorous assassin Vienna Salvatori has a new target. Crossing time and space, Vienna takes one final job to free her from this life.

But when the Master is hunted through the slums and ganglands of London, the line is blurred between predator and prey...

3. Vengeance by Matt Fitton

The Daleks are returning. Their plan, long in the making, is complete. Earth will be theirs once more.

But someone stands against them. Someone with his own reasons for revenge – and Vienna and Lila are caught in the crossfire. Because Earth’s greatest hope against the Daleks lies with the Master.

Reviews

Master! gives some much-needed exposure to Eric Roberts‘ lesser-known incarnation of the Master, putting him into a fully-formed and well-realised Blade Runner-esque future London and letting him run riot. Complete with Howard Carter‘s magnificent music and sound design, and with strong direction from Jason Haigh-Ellery and Jamie Anderson, Master! is one of the strongest releases of the year so far and, as such, comes highly recommended.

Who Review

The exploration of a dystopian future across these stories has proved interesting, and although Master! probably won’t blow you away, hearing Eric Roberts back in action against such a vividly realised backdrop makes this an absorbing release from Big Finish.

The Digital Fix

Master! is unique for the usual Master spin-offs because of its perspective, and genuinely redeems Eric Robert’s Master after a long time away and reflecting on the role. Definitely a unique Big Finish experiment with a good look into where releases are heading in terms of structure and story. 9/10.

Indie Mac User

Roberts is a true professional. He might not offer the exquisite vocal menace of Derek Jacobi or Michelle Gomez’s verbal flights of fancy, but he is the Master. Whatever its shortcomings, Master! aptly demonstrates that Doctor Who is all the more interesting for this fact.

We Are Cult

From letting Roberts shine in a meaty role that allows him to bring his charm and menace to the part, to exploring a largely untraveled part of Doctor Who's future history, it's a prime example of what Big Finish has been doing for two decades now. Namely, taking underserved characters and letting them have their moment in the sun.
