The nights are drawing in, spooky season is upon us, and there are terrifying tales for a host of characters from across the Doctor Who universe in this year’s Halloween box set. 

The First Doctor (Stephen Noonan) and Dodo (Lauren Cornelius) encounter a dangerous smoke in 19th-century Scotland, while Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) visit a Halloween party where it’s really worth keeping an eye on the upstairs neighbours. 

Then, the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and Audacity (Jaye Griffiths) encounter a sinister being on a cargo ship lost in deep space. And finally, the Twelfth Doctor (Jon Culshaw) visits a cave system containing indescribable horrors.

The four spine-tingling tales are: 

Sea Smoke – a First Doctor and Dodo adventure by Jonathan Sims

The First Doctor and Dodo arrive on the Scottish isle of Ulfsay during the height of the 19th-century boom in kelp burning. They quickly realise something is wrong as the smoke from the latest batch of ‘kelp’ begins to cause horrific transformations on the island. 

Party Favours – a Kate Stewart and Osgood adventure by Georgia Cook 

All Bev wants to do is host her yearly Halloween party and heal her fractured relationship with her girlfriend, Annika. Unfortunately, her reclusive upstairs neighbours have been invited to the festivities, and all they want to do is feast. 

Bramble King – an Eighth Doctor and Audacity adventure by Noga Flaishon 

The Doctor and Audacity encounter a strange vision which leads them to Walpurgis-9, a cargo ship drifting powerless through space. In their attempt to assist the ship’s crew, they become entangled in their secrets and encounter the malevolent entity known as ‘The Bramble King’. 

Merlin’s Trap – a Twelfth Doctor adventure by Hannah Kennedy 

When Lainey leads an expedition into the ancient Merlin’s Cave System, the group is warned by Merlin's ghostly voice to explore no further. As Lainey and her team push deeper into the mysterious cave, they encounter things far beyond their comprehension, including Merlin himself. 

This box set includes the Big Finish debut of writer Jonathan Sims, who’s well known for creating horror anthology audio drama The Magnus Archives. 

Sims said: “I can't remember a time when I didn't know Doctor Who. Right from my dad showing me that first episode in black and white home video, through the revival when I was a teen and into the modern day, Doctor Who has always been with me. It's in the very DNA of British genre writing, and it’s a true joy to get to add some grotesque new horrors into the rogues’ gallery of its aliens!” 

Another writer making their Big Finish debut in this set is Hannah Kennedy, a winner of the 2024 BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Competition. 

Kennedy said: “The process has been super interesting. It’s very different to anything else I’ve ever worked on. Obviously, in the world of Doctor Who, there are specific rules and things you can and can’t do, but there’s space to do new and exciting things within that. And I love that Big Finish came to me and said, ‘it’s a Halloween anthology, give us your best scares!’”
