A killer Krynoid encounter for the Third Doctor

As the nights draw in, this year’s spooky season will bring a brand-new box set of four haunting horror stories set across the Doctor Who universe, featuring the Doctors and UNIT facing off against monsters old and new. 

One of the full-cast audio episodes will feature the Third Doctor (Tim Treloar) and Jo Jones (Katy Manning) as they encounter witch hunters in sixteenth-century England. But there’s a more deadly terror lurking beneath the marshes, and they find themselves in a confrontation with the Krynoid – the carnivorous plant first seen in 1976 TV story The Seeds of Doom. 

In the other stories, the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) gets involved with a monster in a mirror, the staff of a UNIT call centre discover something lurking in the dark, and the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) and Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) investigate a mystery in a tormented hospital.

Doctor, Doctor, Doctor – a Seventh Doctor adventure by Stewart Pringle and Lauren Mooney

In the 1980s, four physics students find themselves drawn to a strange mirror, seemingly haunted by a ghastly figure carrying a distinctive umbrella… 

As they experiment with the mirror, they begin to lose themselves in its mystery, as the entity within seeks to break into their world. 

The Song of the Reed Man – a Third Doctor and Jo Jones adventure by Katherine White

When the Doctor and Jo land in the marshes of Essex, in 1562, they find themselves at the dawn of England’s witch hunting mania. 
 
But lurking beneath the waterways, there lies an ancient evil, ready to hunt and feast. Can the Doctor help an isolated coven see reason, before it’s too late? 

Office Space – a UNIT adventure by Georgia Cook and Fio Tretheway

It’s Max’s first night shift at the UNIT liaison call centre in Chester, screening emergency calls from the public for signs of extraterrestrial threat. 

But tonight the calls hold something far deadlier, and soon Max and his colleagues find themselves fighting for their lives to survive against the night itself. 

Overworked – a Fifth Doctor and Nyssa adventure by Hannah Kennedy 

When the TARDIS locks on to a signal calling out for a ‘doctor’, Nyssa and the Doctor are brought to a hospital on Earth in 1974. 
 
However, with the help of cleaners Harold and Sophie, they discover that something is very wrong with the patients here, something otherworldly. 

“It was great fun bringing back some of our favourite writers from the previous set in Hannah and Georgia, plus a few old hands like Stewart and Lauren and Fio and throwing in a newer name like Katherine to bring it all together. There’s a mix of tales and tones in a hopefully terrifying – family level – way…” 

Katherine White, the writer bringing back a classic monster in The Song of the Reed Man, added: “The Krynoids are absolutely terrifying, aren’t they? They are these unrelenting monsters that will stop at nothing to spread and eat and thrive. And when they start to possess people, they get into their psyche – you begin losing the person you love and the monster starts to come out.  

“And I think that taps into something really primal in all of us. That fear of being confronted with a creature that you can’t reason with – it doesn’t want your money, it doesn’t want your intelligence, it wants you, it wants your flesh and your blood, and it wants to then completely take over you. And I think being confronted by that in the salt marshes of Essex is an absolutely paralysing thought.”
