Available exclusively from the Big Finish website to buy and download today, Doctor Who: The Churchill Years Volume 1 presents four new tales of Winston Churchill's (Ian McNeice) encounters with the Doctor, throughout World War Two and beyond!

First appearing as the Prime Minister in the Doctor Who TV story Victory of the Daleks, Ian reprises his role while also narrating the four tales, which feature the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors. Supporting him is a full cast of actors, included Danny Horn and Holly Earl as Christmas companions Kazran Sardick and Lily Arwell respectively, and Nicholas Briggs as a Dalek!

Critics have been raving over this latest New Series box set; check out some of the comments below and order your copy today!

'The Churchill Years was a brilliant surprise, taking advantage of Churchill’s many character traits and uses that for him to play off against any of the fun supporting characters. The quality of the story writing was superb, the interconnections with the on-screen Who stories through Kazran and Lily were fan-pleasing, and the performances were incredibly solid, most particularly from Ian McNeice who is still the go-to man for playing a credible Churchill.'

Ryan Pollard, Starburst

'How do Big Finish get it so right so often? Ian McNeice is pitch perfect as Churchill – and any worries you may have about none of the Doctor actors actually appearing in the set are dispelled seconds into the first adventure. McNeice is a fantastic actor and his performance as Winston Churchill easily carries the entire set. The sound design is pure post 2005 Who with all the orchestral pizazz of the TV show, and like the TV series this is very character based, no more so than Hetty Warner – because like the TV show Big Finish makes you care deeply about the characters and build a life around them. Hetty could quite easily have been an adequate cypher to get the plot moving along but she is so much more, a real person with a real life and a real background. A great box set and a triumph of character based story telling.'

Ed Watkinson, Planet Mondas

'One of my favourite pieces of editing of the past year in Big Finish is also present in this release; the idea of using the echoes as a device for the listener to go back in time with Winston Churchill within his memories is really effective; it’s a rather special sensory experience, especially as I listened to this story in some new headphones. I don’t normally give the sound designers a special mention in these reviews; but in this you’ve outdone yourself.'

Daniel Whitaker, Gallifrey Archives

'Overall, the first Churchill box set is a marvellous surprise... It’s a set you’ll return to time and time again, both for the sheer quality of the storywriting, the joyous interconnections with on-screen Who through Kazran and Lily, and the performances, most particularly from Ian McNiece, who manages to shift Churchill through time, changing the performance he gives while still maintaining a consistency of character, and showing us what about the multi-talented Prime Minister would warrant the friendship of someone like the Doctor.'

Tony Fyler, Warped Factor

'The final story has Churchill in his latter days at home in Chartwell in the Ken Bentley story The Chartwell Metamorphosis. This has Lily Arwell (Holly Earl) as nurse and also as the eyes and ears of the Doctor as Churchwell is dabbling in things he shouldn’t. There are excellent performances by Carolyn Seymour and John Banks in a claustrophobic tale mostly focussed on Lily trying to save Churchill from a fate worse than death.'

Tony Jones, Red Rocket Rising
