Wendy Padbury (Zoe Heriot) narrates The Wreck of the World, a new tale for the fourth season of Doctor Who: The Early Adventures. Starring alongside her is Frazer Hines as both the Second Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon.

Set after the Doctor Who TV episode, The Mind Robber, the Doctor, Zoe and Jamie are attempting to repair the TARDIS when they cross paths with colony ship The World, and that’s when their troubles really begin...

Undergoing repairs in deep space, the TARDIS is caught in a collision with the huge, decaying wreck of a starship. Zoe, spacewalking, is separated from her companions in the crash, and the Doctor and Jamie wake to find the TARDIS fused to the side of the ship.

Venturing inside to rescue their friend, they discover that they are on board The World, the very first colony ship to leave Earth, lost mid-voyage under unknown circumstances.

And they are not alone. A terrible suspension chamber is filled with dead, withered human bodies, and a team of gun-toting astronauts are stalking the corridors. But a far greater threat lurks deep inside. The terrifying force responsible for the scuttling of the ship is active once more – and if it can’t be stopped, it won’t just be the end of this World. It’ll be the end of all of them.

We chatted with the writer of this tale, Tim X Atack, to find out what inspired this Second Doctor thriller, "I decided that I was going to write The Wreck of the World in black and white; there’s no mention of colour anywhere in the script, and I imagined the characters appearing on grainy, wonky VHS, the way I first saw stories like The Seeds of Death or The Invasion.

"To my mind there’s always something haunting about that era of Doctor Who, even when it’s being runaround or a bit silly – maybe it’s because so few of those episodes survive on VT, or perhaps it’s something in the strange choices of library music, or the magical, playful nature of Patrick Troughton’s Doctor. But it’s also, for me, the era when the show began to properly identify as space opera. So I tried to combine those elements, giving the TARDIS companions a disconcerting deep-space shipwreck to explore, and pitting them against an all-pervading inhuman force within..."
