In Doctor Who – Short Trips: The Second Oldest Question, first-time Big Finish writer Carrie Thompson has crafted a tale as old as time itself.
Medieval England. A village baying for blood. And a lone defendant in a trial that can only end in death. Can the Doctor, righter of wrongs across the universe – and now travelling barrister-at-law – advocate for the accused and solve a deeper mystery at the same time?
The oldest question in the universe has haunted the Doctor ever since he left Gallifrey. A question that only a few know the answer to. A question that must never be answered.
This isn’t the story of that question.
This is the story of the second oldest question. A question that has plagued humanity for millennia. A question which determines whether someone can live or die. A question that must be answered.
Producer Alfie Shaw explained how the story came about: “I’ve seen a few of Carrie’s stage shows and wanted to bring that witty and engaging style into the world of Doctor Who. When Carrie pitched me this story, I was amazed to learn that it was based on actual historical events. I won’t go into details for fear of spoilers, but I think it qualifies as one of Doctor Who’s most surprising and off-kilter historical adventures!
Writer Carrie Thompson said: “When Alfie asked me to write a Short Trip for the Fifth Doctor I was over the moon. It really has been a dream come true. Working with Alfie as script editor has been an absolute delight; he’s astonishingly creative, and a truly invaluable guide along the path to making a Doctor Who story.
“On the day of the recording, it was so exciting to see Sarah – real life actual Nyssa (OMG!) –bring all of the characters to life with her astounding arsenal of original voices. Along with Lisa’s bold and brilliant direction, they managed to elevate the story in a way that I didn’t think possible.
I hope that the listeners enjoy hearing the story as much as I have enjoyed being a part of making it!”
