We love StoriesBig Finish produce great full-cast audio drama for CD and download, featuring many popular television fantasy series.
The Third Doctor and Liz Shaw are back facing an algorithmic antagonist in a brand-new Doctor Who Short Trip audio adventure.
Available now as a download only, Doctor Who – Short Trips: Blue Boxes, is written by debut Big Finish writer Erin Horáková and narrated by Mark Reynolds. This darkly comedic story centers around phone-line hacking, the dangers of technology and the Doctor’s ambivalent relationship with authority...
Death stalks the phone lines.
UNIT’s been inundated with prank calls. Bored, the Doctor agrees to help Liz investigate. Quickly immersed in the world of phone-line hackers, it is revealed that they’re being killed, one-by-one. With the death toll rising, the Doctor will have to use all his cunning and wits to defeat a foe he can’t even talk to.
He’ll also have to use a blue box. Just not the one you’re expecting.
Doctor Who – Short Trips are short stories, many written by some of Doctor Who’s most popular authors from the worlds of television, print, comics and audio, and read by a host of favourite Big Finish actors.
Writer Erin Horáková said: “This story explores the overlaps between science-fictional tech and the real-world tech that seems equally unreal to us. One of the many excellent things Doctor Who can do is show us unexpected things about the way our world is constructed, and make us ask questions about them.
“The central conceit also offered a way to play with the audio format of the story, making a virtue of necessity, and an irresistibly awful title pun.”
Producer Alfie Shaw said: “Erin’s story focuses on the interesting world of phreaking – phone-line hacking – which is something I knew nothing about. When people talk about hacking, we normally think of computers and the internet, not telephones. But, obviously, as it’s Doctor Who, the hackers aren’t the only problem that the Doctor and Liz have to deal with...”
Narrator Mark Reynolds added: “For the voice actor inspired (as a boy) by watching the great Jon Pertwee as the Doctor in the early 1970s, the chance to perform one of his adventures and say lines written for his character was a remarkable experience, and I feel lucky and proud to have become a part of the Who family on audio.”
Big Finish listeners can save money with a bundle of the Short Trips range and get the 12 stories from series 10 for just £30 – that’s a whole year’s worth of adventures, including the already-released stories, Decline of the Ancient Mariner (read by Mark Reynolds), The Infinite Today (read by Katy Manning), Deleted Scenes (read by Frazer Hines), Dead Woman Walking (read by Sophie Aldred), Regeneration Impossible (read by Jacob Dudman), Out of the Deep (read by Peter Purves,) and Downward Spiral (read by Sarah Sutton), These Stolen Hours (read by India Fisher), Her Own Bootstraps (read by Jacob Dudman) and The Meaning of Red (read by Nicola Bryant).
