2.3 The Turn of the Tides by Nina Millns

Recorded on: 13 October 2021 and more TBA
Recorded at: The Soundhouse

Although all different in tone, these are three entertaining tales. Stolen Futures has the feel of a Romana-focussed The Companions of Doctor Who novel, while Prism is more like a holiday special, bringing two heroes together as a one-off. For us however, it’s The Turn of the Tides which impresses the most: Rani fills the shoes of a young Sarah Jane Smith admirably and there’s boundless potential in pairing her with the seasoned explorer Jo. Jac feels like a character with further potential to explore too. We will gladly take some more adventures with this trio!

The Eighth of March: Protectors of Time is perhaps best summarised as an anthology where each episode has a different strength... It’s a wonderful celebration of its characters and has a great diversity of ideas to sell the set on for a wide range of people. 7/10.

What’s great about Big Finish’s anthologies is they expose you to ranges you might never have tried otherwise. The highest compliment I can pay Abigail Burdess’ story Prism is that it immediately made me want to look up other volumes of Jenny: The Doctor’s Daughter and Lady Christina.

The second Eighth of March boxset is a bright and shiny thing, such as would catch the eye of Lady Christina. It shows women in a handful of corners of the universe being powerful, self-determining, compassionate, clever, collaborative, caring and cool. It also tells some seriously good science-fiction stories with enormous gusto, and one ecological story with a never-ending hope. The Eight Of March 2: Protectors of Time is a feelgood collection of empowering stories that will leave you wanting more of everything it gives.
